RESILIENCE case study: Enhancing workplace readiness with the University of Glasgow

2nd March 2026

MsC Industrial Biotechnology students from the medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Graduate School of the University of Glasgow recently attended a course delivered by RESILIENCE partner, Heriot-Watt Universty's FlexBIO Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre. In this case study you will hear from Jed Lennox, Teaching Fellow at the Unversity of Glasgow and from students who benefitted from the experience.

The students that attended the visit and used the RESILIENCE resources have gone on for an industrial placement in India, and Jed Lennox credits the session with giving them more confidence and a good starting point for their placement.

Gary was informed about RESILIENCE through connections at IBIoIC and FlexBIO, and he felt that the programme could be a great way to enhance learning experiences and the skills of his final year students.

“RESILIENCE provided access to equipment (virtually) that I would not have had the chance  to give students the experience of otherwise.”
Jed Lennox, Teaching Fellow, University of Glasgow

The day with the RESILIENCE team started with an immersive VR training session on assembling a bioreactor, followed by a VR session exploring how the cell works. Cressida Neola Menezes, one of the student’s taking part, described the experience of seeing how digital tools could be used for training and developing skills as, “truly enriching”. The group then toured FlexBio’s small- and large-scale fermentation and downstream processing facilities, before getting a real-world chance to carry out the skils they had learned virtually: assembling a bioreactor in FlexBio’s Mammalian Cell Culture Lab.

“This indeed was a valuable learning: to see the theory I study in the classroom being practiced in the real-world, helping me connect teh bridge between the two!”
Cressida Neola Menezes, University of Glasgow, Student Beneficiary
