Pilot-Scale Upstream Bioprocessing: 300L Bioreactor training

FLEXBIO, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

7 - 10 October 2025

£2600

This 4-day intensive training course is designed for professionals and researchers looking to advance their expertise in large-scale upstream bioprocessing, with a focus on scale-up to 300 L pilot-scale operations. Participants will explore the principles and practical steps involved in scaling microbial cell culture to production-relevant volumes, supported by expert-led lectures, live demonstrations, and hands-on training.

Key topics include process design and parameter translation, bioreactor preparation, sterilisation protocols, inoculation procedures, online monitoring, and harvest strategies.

Hosted by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC), this course offers participants the opportunity to operate a 300 L stainless steel stirred-tank bioreactor, providing practical experience that bridges laboratory knowledge with industrial application. Upon completion, attendees will have the technical skills and confidence to manage upstream processes at pilot scale. A certificate of completion will be awarded to all successful participants.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the principles and challenges of scaling upstream bioprocesses from bench-scale to 300 L pilot-scale operations.

  • Gain hands-on experience in preparing, sterilising, inoculating, monitoring, and harvesting using a 300 L stainless steel bioreactor.

  • Learn how to translate key process parameters to maintain culture performance and product quality during scale-up.

  • Develop skills to troubleshoot large-scale upstream processes and apply effective monitoring and control strategies.

Who should attend?

  • Scientists, engineers, graduates, technical managers, and operators, particularly those beginning or advancing their careers in upstream bioprocessing.

  • Individuals seeking practical experience in operating large-scale bioreactors or looking to enhance their understanding of upstream scale-up strategies.
