BioProcess360: Integrated Upstream and Downstream Bioprocessing

FLEXBIO, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

4 - 8 May 2026

£2600

This 5-day comprehensive training course offers an end-to-end exploration of the biomanufacturing process, integrating both upstream and downstream operations into a unified, hands-on learning experience. Participants will begin by cultivating a recombinant protein using a microbial expression system in a 30 L stainless steel stirred-tank bioreactor, gaining direct experience in bioreactor setup, sterilisation, inoculation, monitoring, and harvest procedures.

The course then transitions to downstream processing, where participants will apply industryrelevant techniques including disc-stack centrifugation, high-pressure homogenisation, tangential flow filtration (TFF), and chromatography to recover and purify the expressed protein.

With a balanced focus on theoretical grounding and practical application, this course is ideal for professionals seeking a complete understanding of the bioprocessing workflow - from cell culture through to purified product. A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful participation.

Learning outcomes:

  • Gain hands-on experience in upstream processing by cultivating recombinant protein in a 30 L bioreactor, focusing on preparation, sterilisation, inoculation, and real-time monitoring.

  • Understand the full bioprocessing workflow, connecting upstream operations with downstream purification strategies.

  • Apply key downstream techniques including centrifugation, homogenisation, TFF, and chromatography to isolate and purify the target protein.

  • Develop skills to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise process parameters at every stage for improved yield and product quality.

Who should attend?

  • Scientists, engineers, graduates, and technical professionals interested in gaining a holistic view of biomanufacturing.

  • Individuals seeking to build or strengthen practical skills across both upstream and downstream bioprocessing workflows.
